Tom CahalanWhat is the best e-commerce system?
07th Oct, 2008 @ 07:32 amHaving our own in-house e-commerce platform, you might think the simple and easy answer to this question would be to plug it. And I would - if that was the point of this article. Instead this is a very brief article to summarise a very basic point: there is no all ruling, supreme e-commerce platform.
The best e-commerce platform out there is not decided based on all of the features it has, but from what you need it to do. Of course if it offers things you didn't think you needed which will help conversion and minimise manual tasks it can be seen as greater. But the majority of people seem to approach the task on the scale of what one offers the most, rather than what they need it for.
Do you need your e-commerce platform to offer sophisticated imaging software, if all your images are carefully "burrowed" from other websites? Or an intricate filtering system if you only have a few products.
What you do need to consider though is how expandable it is and how easy it is to be able to test on it. If you're not able to easily setup any conversion testing and successfully measure it, or if it's even difficult to get any data from it, you're on the wrong platform. You can make all the changes you want, but you're in the dark without having anything that correctly feeds back real data.
